Thanks for your interest in joining the Aurora 88.
The 88s have 2 tryouts during the year, one in the Spring through Summer typically March/April to Aug/Set, and the 2nd in the Fall through Winter Oct to March, with a month off in December.
When you tryout you don’t need any derby experience, but it does help if you know how to skate, stop, or any of the basics. If you’re waiting on the next tryout, this is the time we recommend open skates. You can find a schedule at your local rink at the following links
We also recommend any other exercise/activities that will help you physically get in shape. Mainly leg/quad and core strengthening.
Typically before tryouts we have recruitment events, such as Info Night where we talk about gear, commitment, history of the league, and how we operate. Derby Bootcamps to help teach you basics skills to also help prepare you for tryouts, and derby, and we are always available to answer any questions you have. To keep track of when these events are happening be sure to LIKE us on our Facebook Page,
When you tryout, you are trying out to join our Sidekick Program, meaning a training program for newer derby skaters who will learn skating skills, drills, strategies, safety, and rules that pertain to roller derby. There are 2 stages in the Sidekick program, the first is the initial tryout to get into “GREEN”. This part of the program is learning your basic skills that help you get comfortable, and help you build your confidence in skating. The green portion is 8-10 classes, but there is time in between classes to continue to train outside of practices, because of the leagues busy schedule. Such as scrimmages, bouts, league breaks, and holiday breaks. A test is held to see if you advance to the next portion, “YELLOW”. This is where contact, strategy and more advance drills are taught. This is also 8-10 classes, and an additional month of training with the league. There is also a written test that will be taken over the WFTDA Rules, you need an 80% or higher to Pass, and an endurance test of 27 laps in 5 min. Or under.
For more information on what basics skills are tested on, and the rules please check out
Once you have cleared, green, yellow, written test, and endurance test, congratulations, You’re “RED”!!! You’re on your way to scrimmaging, and then bouting hopefully soon after.
During your training we also give you lots of 1 on 1 feedback and guidance, written reports on your progress, and even videos taken of your training, so you yourself can see how you’re progressing.
Requirements to partake in the Sidekick Program
1. Must be 18+
2. Must pay monthly dues ($50)
3. Must maintain a 75% attendance, if failed to do so you’ll be asked to join the next program
Practices are Tuesdays and Sundays 8pm to 10:30pm
4. Have Fun, Make Friend, and do something that is challenging, but oh so rewarding
Please know that Roller Derby is a commitment, on top of skating, making friends, and having fun. We also take the time to give back to the community by volunteering, attending events, and further spreading the word about the Aurora 88s. We also are a non-for profit business, that’s run by the skaters, for the skaters. Eventually as your relationship with the league continues, you’ll be asked to participate in however extra time you have available, no job is too small to help us keep running.
